Opinion | It’s Time to Break Up Facebook By Chris Hughes New York Times May 9, 2019 The last time I saw Mark Zuckerberg was in the summer of 2017, several months before the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke. We met at Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif., office and drove to his house, in a quiet, leafy neighborhood. We spent an hour or two together while his toddler daughter cruised around. We talked politics mostly, a little about Facebook, a bit about our families. When the shadows grew long, I had to head out. I hugged his wife, Priscilla, and…

Why South Africans Are Talking About Land Expropriation By Jon Allsop The Nation May 9, 2019 Chiti Makwetu’s farm is a long way away from the main road. That, he believes, is why his government has been ignoring him. One day last September, he complained that efforts to install electricity have been limited to properties near the road—a ploy, he suggested, to convince passersby of the government’s commitment to the area. Meanwhile, land farther from view, like his, has been neglected. “We are literally off the grid,” he said. Makwetu’s father leased this land from the South African…

The White House revoked my press pass. It’s not just me — it’s curtailing access for all journalists. By Dana Milbank Washington Post May 9, 2019 For the past 21 years, I have had the high privilege of holding a White House press pass, a magical ticket that gives the bearer a front-row seat to history. I was in the White House the night Bill Clinton admitted his affair with Monica Lewinsky, and the day he was impeached. I was there on Sept. 11, 2001, and the fearful days thereafter, when we were trained to use escape hoods.…

Donald Trump Jr. Is Subpoenaed to Testify to Senate Panel on Russia Contacts New York Times May 8, 2019 Mr. Trump is the first of the president’s children to be subpoenaed in the congressional investigations into Russia’s 2016 election interference, and the move by the Republican-led committee is a sign that some members of the president’s party are not aligned with his desire for a swift end to all of the Russia inquiries. News of the subpoena came a day after Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, sought to lower the curtain on the…

Top Dem claims Mueller report shows Russia ‘artificially’ placed Trump in White House By Adam Shaw Fox News May 8, 2019 New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee, defends effort to procure special counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. A top Democratic lawmaker claimed Wednesday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report shows Moscow “artificially” placed President Trump in the White House — despite the report finding no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion. The statement came amid a fiery session of the House Judiciary Committee where lawmakers…

Rudy Giuliani’s White World By Wayne Barrett Village Voice May 8, 2019 HIS WORLD IS AS White as Seinfeld’s, a slice of the city so comfortably one-dimensional that even the popular star of the ongoing Giuliani serial cannot see his own, peculiarly un-New York, isolation. Not since the days of Vincent Impelliteri nearly half a century ago — through the tenures of Robert Wagner, John Lindsay, Abe Beame, Ed Koch, and David Dinkins — have there been so few black faces in high places in a city administration. Never before has 80 percent of any ethnic group rejected…

Meghan McCain, Seth Meyers have testy exchange over Ilhan Omar: ‘Are you her publicist?’ By Joseph Wulfsohn Fox News May 8, 2019 “The View” co-host Meghan McCain and “Late Night” host Seth Meyers butted heads on Wednesday morning’s show over McCain’s criticisms of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, who has repeatedly been accused of anti-Semitism. It escalated to the point where McCain asked the NBC host if he was Omar’s “publicist.” Meyers brought up McCain’s commentary on ABC’s “This Week” following the deadly synagogue shooting at the Poway, Calif., last month where she invoked Omar’s tweets, and asserted that…
